Judgment
Standstill. Evil people do not further the perseverance of the superior man. The great departs, the small approaches.
Hexagram 12, Standstill, symbolizes a fundamental severance between the high and the low, where Heaven ascends and Earth sinks, moving irrevocably apart. This divergence creates a vacuum of communication and meaning, described as "people not in their right places." In such a climate, the natural order is inverted; the noble and substantial retreats while the petty and trivial encroaches. The "great departs" because the environment can no longer sustain integrity, and the "small arrives" to fill the void with discord.
Philosophically, this hexagram does not merely predict misfortune but diagnoses a structural misalignment of values. The warning that it is "not advantageous for the superior person to persevere" is not a call to surrender, but a strategic imperative for withdrawal. To force progress during a time of standstill is to exhaust oneself against the tide of the era. Instead, the wise individual recognizes the season of obstruction as a necessary period for internal cultivation. By preserving one’s inner light and retreating from the chaos, one maintains the potential for future harmony. Standstill, therefore, is not an end, but a silent, gestational pause before the inevitable return of balance.
Structure
When grass is uprooted, sod comes with it. Each according to his kind. Perseverance brings good fortune and success.
They bear and endure; this means good fortune for inferior people. The standstill serves to help the superior man to success.
They bear shame.
He who acts at the command of the highest remains without blame. Those of like mind partake of the blessing.
Standstill is giving way. Good fortune for the great man. 'What if it should fail, what if it should fail?' In this way he ties it to a cluster of mulberry shoots.
The standstill comes to an end. First standstill, then good fortune.
