The Power of the Great. Perseverance furthers.

Hexagram 34, Great Power, captures the profound tension between raw potential and the necessity of ethical direction. It represents a state of kinetic abundance where one’s capabilities have surged to a commanding height. Yet, the oracle’s counsel—"Li Zhen," or perseverance in what is right—serves as a crucial philosophical counterweight. It reminds us that power without principle is merely a precursor to chaos. In the modern landscape, this is a warning against the intoxication of agency; the ability to dominate is not the same as the authority to lead. True strength lies not in the expanse of one's reach, but in the depth of one’s self-restraint. To embody this hexagram is to recognize that the highest form of power is the discipline to withhold it until the moment demands justice. Greatness is achieved not by shattering barriers, but by aligning one's immense internal force with the enduring structures of integrity and truth.

Structure

Nine at the beginning

Power in the toes. Continuing brings misfortune. This is certainly true.

Nine in the second place

Perseverance brings good fortune.

Nine in the third place

The inferior man works through power. The superior man does not act thus. To continue is dangerous. A goat butts against a hedge and gets its horns stuck.

Nine in the fourth place

Perseverance brings good fortune. Remorse disappears. The hedge opens; there is no entanglement. Power depends upon the axle of a large wagon.

Six in the fifth place

Loses the goat with ease. No remorse.

Six at the top

A goat butts against a hedge. It cannot go backward, it cannot go forward. Nothing furthers. If one notes the difficulty, this brings good fortune.
