Judgment

The Abysmal repeated. If you are sincere, you have success in your heart, and whatever you do succeeds.

Hexagram 29, *Xi Kan*, represents the Abysmal, symbolized by water trapped within water. It speaks to the human condition of navigating profound difficulty and the psychological weight of uncertainty. The statement "Sincerity exists; the mind finds a way through" offers a distinct philosophical remedy: survival in the abyss requires not force, but the fluidity of inner truth.

"You fu" suggests that authenticity is our sole anchor when external support vanishes. The "heart" must remain open and adaptable, mirroring the nature of water—it yields to obstacles yet ultimately carves its path through persistence. This is a call for disciplined resilience, a state where one acknowledges the danger without succumbing to despair.

Furthermore, "Action is esteemed" affirms that the noblest response to entrapment is continued, principled movement. By maintaining inner equilibrium, one transforms a potential dead-end into a journey of character. Ultimately, this hexagram teaches that while we cannot always control the depths into which we fall, we possess absolute agency over the integrity with which we navigate them.

Nine in the second place

The abyss is dangerous. One should strive to attain through small things only.

Six in the third place

Forward and backward, abyss on abyss. In such danger, pause at first and wait, otherwise you will fall into a pit in the abyss. Do not act in this way.

Six in the fourth place

A jug of wine, a bowl of rice with it; earthen vessels passed through the window. There is certainly no blame in this.

Nine in the fifth place

The abyss is not filled to overflowing, it is filled only to the rim. No blame.

Six at the top

Bound with cords and ropes, shut in between thorn-hedged prison walls: for three years one does not find the way. Misfortune.
